Maritime labour convention 2006 - Rights of seafarers!
International
maritime organization put their best effort to implement MLC 2006. IMO
in connection with ILO prepared MLC to ensure the rights of our
seafarers. Now every merchant ship are compelled to comply with MLC
2006. Which puts emphasis on some important issues such as Rest hour,
accommodation , food, salary and many other issues.
According to this
convention A seafarer must get at least 10 hours rest per day and one
session rest shall not be less than 6 hours. And seafarers shall get
weekly holydays when applicable.
At ship every ship personnel must be
provided with a standard food not less than 6$ per day. Their food must
be hygienic and healthy.Food cost must be carried by shipping company.
Seafarers have the rights to get standard accommodation facilities in
accordance with MLC.
seafarers shall not pay any money or bribe for the
processing of their job on board. Such expenses shall be paid by company.
By law seafarers traveling cost will be paid by company. salary of
seafarers must be cleared on time.Company must pay the salary according
to the agreement made before joining ship. And by law a seafarer can
claim any facility which is there in company article.
seafarers have the
rights to get shore leave at any port except some exception. Once
contract of the seafarer finished he may claim for sign off from ship
and company shall arrange as required. Seafarers also have some
responsibilities towards the company and their profit. They shall not
make misuse of theirs Rights by law. Port of registry and Port state
control is responsible for checking whether shipping companies are
complying with Regulations or not. They must ensure that seafarers are
enjoying their full rights.
